International Workshop on Translation
West Bengal State University
22-24th November, 2017
The growing body of Dalit literature has seen the emergence of a space that is fraught with anxieties and apprehensions, hopes and anticipations. With the increasing demand for intellectual interactions and exchanges between the ‘elite’ centres and the margins, English has functioned both as a link-language and as one that connects the Dalit discourse with the international discourse of human rights. Translation has thus become a key word and speeches, essays, manifestoes have needed translation into common Indian languages, Hindi or English. The project of translation, however, has been a difficult job with the complex relation between the original and the target languages, and the issues of their unequal power and access.
The planning for this workshop, which began with a Call for Translators in April, progressed with the selected participants translating a given text which they will bring to the workshop. While the first 2 days will have the scholars of Translation Studies, translators and the writers presenting their thoughts and experiences on translation, the last day will bring together the translator with the author whose text they have translated so as to facilitate discussion on the text chosen for translation. A special invitee is Mandira Sen, Director of Stree Samya, who have published many of the first texts of Dalit authors, both in the original and in translation.
To attend the workshop:
Registration is at Rs. 200/day (lunch included), and Rs. 100/day (lunch not included).
Certificates to be awarded to all registered participants.
